What is online counselling?

A graphic of a woman using a computer to access online therapy

Covid changed everything, including Counselling. Most therapists during the pandemic were forced to move their businesses online, and work with clients via video conferencing. Online Counselling is the same as in-person counselling, but it is conducted online through Zoom. The format of online therapy is the same as with in-person counselling, sessions are completely confidential, and last for 50 minutes, and as with in-person therapy, you will see me at the same time on the same day each week.

My clients can choose whether to see me in person or online. I offer both services, which are priced the same.

Online counselling can be a great way to access counselling in a comfortable, safe and convenient way. It can be especially helpful when you are unable to access traditional in-person therapy due to location or time constraints.

Online counselling also allows us to work together in a secure and confidential virtual environment. We will use video conferencing to connect, and this means that we can see and hear each other in real-time. This can help to create a more personal connection, even though we may be miles apart, and can help to make the counselling process more effective.

How does online counselling work?

As with face-to-face therapy, our online sessions would occur every week at the same time and on the same day. The sessions last for 50 minutes and are completely confidential. Our sessions are client-driven, so whatever you bring to the session is discussed, and we use the time to explore and process your feelings and emotions. During the session, I may use a variety of approaches and techniques to help you work through your issues.

It is my job to help you move from disarray to clarity. Each person should feel heard, understood, and calm after their session with me. It works the same way whether you are in a face-to-face or online session, but online counselling offers the added convenience of being able to conduct sessions in the comfort of your own home. Online counselling also offers more flexibility in scheduling and may be more accessible to those with busy schedules or who live in remote areas.

Is online counselling suitable for teens?

It is, absolutely yes, so long as the teen feels like they have a safe, private space from which to join the session. Online counselling is effective for teenagers on a variety of topics and can be a great option for young people, as it gives them a level of control over the process and the ability to access help from the comfort and security of their own homes. I will also be able to tailor sessions to meet the specific needs of young clients, helping to create an environment which is both reassuring and beneficial to the teen.

Can online counselling help depression?

Online counselling can provide a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space for individuals to talk about their depression and receive support. A counsellor may provide support, strategies and coping mechanisms which can help the individual to manage their depression.

Because online counselling can be done from home, a depressed client may choose it over in-person counselling. Some people find the screen to be a layer of protection that allows them to completely open up emotionally, and be fully vulnerable within the comforts of their own homes.

It is important to note that online counselling is not suitable for everyone and if someone is feeling suicidal or is in crisis then they should seek immediate medical help.

What are the benefits of online counselling?

  1. Convenience: Online counselling offers the convenience of being able to access the support you need from the comfort of your own home.

  2. Accessibility: For some clients, the idea of leaving their homes and going to see a therapist seems completely impossible, so having the ability to see a counsellor online can be hugely healing. Online counselling can also be accessed by people who may not be able to attend traditional face-to-face counselling, such as those with physical disabilities, or who live in remote areas.

  3. Privacy: Online counselling provides a safe and secure environment to discuss sensitive personal issues without the fear of being overheard or judged.

  4. Scheduling: Online counselling sessions can be scheduled to fit within a client's busy lifestyle.

How much does online counselling cost?

My online counselling sessions cost £85 per 50-minute session, the same as my in-person sessions.
